In the 1980s, 16-year-old Jude (Asa Butterfield) and his best friend Teddy dream of moving to New York City to escape their small Vermont home town. Jude's father Les (Ethan Hawke) comes for a visit along with his girlfriend Di and Di's daughter, Eliza (Hailee Steinfeld).
Les asks Jude to come live with him in Manhattan, where the teen, a punk rock fan who writes songs and plays guitar, enjoys exploring New York's eclectic music scene and getting to know Eliza.
