Lisa Spinelli (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a New York kindergarten teacher whose teenage children are more interested in their phones than in any personal interaction. She also doesn't feel connected to her husband. She attends a weekly poetry class and realizes that she doesn't excel in that either.
One day, she hears her five-year-old student Jimmy (Parker Sevak) reciting a deep and soulful poem that is way beyond his capability. She immediately writes it down, shocked at how such a young kid can compose something that's incredibly genius.
Lisa is further distraught when she realizes Jimmy doesn't have a mother and that his father is largely absent from his life. Afraid that society will crush his creativity, Lisa becomes obsessed with him and crosses a line.
